Wheel Building for GB cyclist Tom Scammell19 year old, GB cycling prospect, Tom Scammell trains as a full time track cyclist with the Olympic Development team at the Newport Velodrome. Normal wheels can't cope with the kind of power that Tom puts through the wheels and at Bristol Bike Centre we have custom built a set of DT Swiss TK540 track wheels with a Dura Ace hub using Sapim 13/14g ss spokes in a 4-cross pattern for extra strength. These are Tom's training wheels and to make them even stronger and reliable we have tied & soldered them.
Wheel building is a dying art in bike shops, but is one of Gary's specialist skills. A custom built wheel can be adapted to your individual needs, whether it be strength, durability, weight, or aerodynamics and benefits from the hand built quality that factory wheels lack. You can choose the lacing pattern to suit your needs, and tie & solder is another option to consider should you wish to add extra strength and durability to your wheels.
Good luck for 2016, Tom! We hope the training wheels serve you well and look forward to seeing you on the podium soon!
